Exodus 17:1-6
1And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink. 2Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD? 3And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst? 4And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me. 5And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go. 6Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

This story takes place after God supplies food, the bread and fish. Now they are thirsty because of too little water. They think death in immanent due to too little water.

The Jews murmured against Moses because they think God lead them out to die from lack of water.

God tells Moses to strike a rock and water will come out.

John 6:16-21
16And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea, 17And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. 18And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. 19So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. 20But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. 21Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

Disciples enter ship and head out to sea. Too much water is present due to a great wind. They think death in immanent due to the water. Jesus shows up out at see and tells them not to be afraid. Jesus gets in the ship and immediately they are all on land. Many people show up.

The reverse takes place.

Too much water vs. too little water: both will cause death. In one, too much water turns into dry land immediately when Jesus shows up, in the other, too much dry land (a rock- the driest of land) turn into water immediately when God shows up. The exact opposite happens, but both happen immediately.
